What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. To do this a post is placed in the jawbone and gives support to a replacement tooth, thus doing the job of the root of a natural tooth. Fixed bridges and dentures can also be supported by implants.
In most cases there are two stages to implant treatment. Firstly, the implant is placed in the jaw. Then, at later date, and after the implant has integrated and healed, the replacement teeth are attached to the implant.
Sometimes it is also possible for temporary teeth to be attached to the implant.
Would implants be right for me?
To help you decide whether dental implants are right for you, you can contact us on 01752 775698 to arrange a consultation where we will be able to go over the different options available to you. We will be happy to answer any queries you may have.
Should you decide to go ahead, a treatment plan will take be prepared
- An implant will be placed in a hole in the jaw with a local anaesthetic .
- The implant is placed in and the gum is stitched allowing it to heal over the implant.
- Over several months the bone will grow around the implant under the gum, holding it firm.
Is there any age limit to have an implant done?
What is the difference between implants and dentures?
As the dental implants are fixed, there is no need to worry about them becoming loose when you socialise with people or avoid certain foods. With these advantages, you will feel more confident and enjoy the better life style you deserve!
When implants are placed where the roots used to be, there is a good chance that the natural shrinking of the bone and facial structure, will stop. It is this shrinking that often gives the typical signs of aging when you lose your teeth.
What should I expect during the implant procedure?
How soon can I have my smile back after loosing teeth?
The average treatment time for an implant procedure is just over two months if you are already presented with a gap.
If you need a tooth extracted, then we normally wait 4-8 weeks, before we start the implant procedure, so the gum can heal fully fully prior to the implant process.
If there is a defect or infection present, then a longer healing time might be advisable. Equally if there are no problems in the area, then a shorter treatment time will be acceptable.
The duration of your treatment, the complexities and the details of the sessions involved will be discussed with you during your full implant consultation.
